Hike Seoul's old city wall to the top of Inwangsan

Self-paid. The blogger paid for this visit.

A short, steep hike that starts from Gyeongbokgung Station and follows the old Seoul city wall up to a rocky peak. The summit looks out over the whole city to Namsan Tower, and the round trip takes under three hours.

계단 하나 끝났다 싶으면 또 나오고, 또 끝났다 싶으면 또 계단

One staircase ends, another begins. Then another.

Is it for you?

Go forYou walk out of the subway and onto the trail, no bus or car needed. The fortress wall and views open up along the way, so the steep parts go by fast. The summit view of downtown Seoul and Namsan Tower is the reward.
Skip ifYou want an easy walk. It is almost all stairs and rock steps, with rope sections near the top. Weekends get crowded, and you may wait in line near the summit.

Good to know

  • Timing from the blog: Gyeongbokgung Stn Exit 1 to trailhead 30 min, trailhead to summit 45 min, about 2 hours 40 minutes round trip.
  • Pick up gimbap near Exit 3 and snacks at a convenience store on the way. There is nowhere to buy food on the trail.
  • There is no space to sit and eat at the very top. Eat just below the summit.
  • Follow the main road from Exit 1, turn left at the bus stop, and pass Jongno Library to reach the trail.
  • Wear shoes with good grip and bring water. Spring and fall are the best seasons.
